No Bounds 2020 Virtual 3D x Sheffield Doc/Fest Present...
In a continuation of this years No Bounds 2020 Virtual 3D hybrid event we are partnering with Sheffield Doc/Fest to co present two absolutely brilliant documentaries at this year's festival -Rhyme & Rhythm Weekender. Both pieces are essential viewing for all those invested in electronic music culture and highlight two often negelected topics.
The first is part of the Sheffield Doc/Fest Community Screening Programme: BRING DOWN THE WALLS by Phil Collins, which explores the coinciding escalation of mass incarceration in 1980s America with the house music that emerged from Black, Latinx and queer communities, proposing the dance floor as a space of personal and collective liberation. And second we're delighted to present the European Premiere of SISTERS WITH TRANSISTORS - The remarkable story of electronic music's unsung heroines narrated by Laurie Anderson. Pioneering composers such as Maryanne Amacher, Bebe Barron, Suzanne Ciani, Delia Derbyshire, Pauline Oliveros, Daphne Oram, Eliane Radigue, Clara Rockmore, Laurie Spiegel and Space Lady were inventing the sounds of the future with tape recorders, the first synthesisers and early computers the size of a room. When electronic music was finally recognised, they were almost forgotten. Director Lisa Rovner rectifies this injustice with rare archives showing their wild creativity. Your senses will thank you.
PLUS a special pre-recorded online performance from The Space Lady!
The Space Lady is an outsider music icon, known for her ethereal sound and wearing a stunning winged helmet while playing versions of contemporary pop music on a vintage accordion and a retro-futuristic sounding Casio keyboard.
Watch at Showroom Cinema, Saturday 31 October – 17:00 followed by a live online Q&A with director Lisa Rovner, in conversation with Sheffield Doc/Fest Deputy Director Melanie Iredale. Watch online until 12 November. Details available >>> bit.ly/2Hg0kKk
