‘Mercury In The Midnight Sky 🌌’

A live audio visual installation devised within and taking influence from @invisiblewindfactory.

The film was produced for - and premiered on - @outlandsnetwork festival which took place on 27 + 28 February 2021.

Based around compositions by Joel C Murray (@Joel_c_murray) and custom built lighting constructions designed and fabricated by Venya Krutikov & the Kazimier team. The piece was captured by filmmaker Tommy Husband (@tmmyhsbnd) and Sound engineer Rory Ballantyne (@studiothefade) and utilises the cavernous main room of the IWF venue, its natural reverb and large floor space.

Centred around a drum kit surrounded by bespoke lighting sculptures and using sound to light technology, lighting is triggered by the drums and manipulated live by Krutikov using a mixture of pre-designed scenes and improvisation along with the music.

Rather than a broadcasted live performance, Mercury in the Midnight Sky is devised as a stand-alone piece of film, highlighting the absence of audience, using wide angles and sound mixed to footage, the viewer hearing the sound from camera point of view, reverb increasing as the wide shot is established, suggesting themes of isolation and loneliness.
